1. File preparations First, download the "tgv.tar.gz" file from http://optik2.mtk.nao.ac.jp/~takeda/tgv/ Place this file in the root of "C:" drive of Windows PC and expand it there. Next, you have to create pgplot directory and copy necessary files, which can be done as follows. mkdir c:\pgplot copy c:\tgv\grfont.dat c:\pgplot copy c:\tgv\grwnd.exe c:\pgplot copy c:\tgv\GrWnd.ini c:\pgplot copy c:\tgv\rgb.txt c:\pgplot copy c:\tgv\lGrWn0999.html c:\pgplot 2. Setting environmental variables In order to run TGVIT and CHECKUP, three enviromental variables have to be properly configured. (1) Append "C:\tgv" in the (already exsisting) PATH variable, so that the program/data in C:\tgv may be accessed from any arbitrary directories. (2) Newly create TGV variable and assign C:\tgv to it. (3) Newly create PGPLOT variable and assign C:\pgplot to it. Do as follows (case of Windows XP): You should login as an administrator-equivalent user. [1] start->control panels->performance and maintenance->system [2] Then click the "configuration" tab to show "system property". [3] Click the "environment variables" button. Click the "new" button at the "system environment variable" window, and set TGV and C:\tgv as a name and value, respectively. (Note that Windows OS is case-insensitive; so lower or upper cases are irrelevant.) And click the "OK" button. Click the "new" button at the "system environment variable" window, and set PGPOT and C:\pgplot as a name and value, respectively. (Note that Windows OS is case-insensitive; so lower or upper cases are irrelevant.) And click the "OK" button. Click the "edit" button at the "system environment variable" window, and edit the PATH variable (maybe already existing) such that appending C:\tgv to the existing data followed by semicolon. For example, if PATH variable already has a value of C:\%SystemRoot%\system32 , you should modify it as C:\%SystemRoot%\system32;C:\tgv . And click the "OK" button. Finally, click the "OK" button of the environment variables window, and that of the system property window, in order to make all the applied changes effective. I suggest you reboot your PC after you have finished all these procedures. #Alternatively, maybe the easiest method (if somewhat tedious) #is to execute "c:\tgv\setenvtgv (press Enter)" every time #you open the command prompt window. #In you find this cumbersome, you can accomplish this #automatically upon opening the command prompt window #by specifying c:\tgv\setenvtgv.bat #at the link-destination in the "property" of #command prompt (in the "shortcut" tab therein) Finally, check whether everything has been correctly done. Execute "set (Enter)" in the command prompt window. If you can confirm that the value (c:\tgv) of the variable TGV is correctly assigned and that "C:\tgv) is included in the PATH variable, that's OK. 3. How to run TGVIT See Sect. 2 of Takeda et al. (2005, PASJ, 57, 27) for the brief description of TGVIT (an updated version of the original TGV program), which determines Teff, log g, vt, and [Fe/H] for a given set of EW (equivalent width) values of Fe I and Fe II lines. Its usage is as follows. tgvit N data_file_name(without".obs") N: Number of iterations (i.e., iterated |N| times) If N is positive (new calculation mode), arbitrarily specified values of Teff, logg, and vt (given in initparm.tmp or specified manually upon the prompting) are used as new starting solutions. If N is negative(continuation mode), then the final solutions of the previous run (contained in *.abd file) are read and used as the starting solutions. The number of iterations does not need to be too large; maybe 5-7 would be appropriate. Since the name of the file containing EW data must end always with the extention of ".obs", this extension should not be included here. The format of *.obs file should follow the simple rule: 1st column --> Line No. (see Sect. 6 below) 2nd column --> equivalent width (in mA) (free format) As long as this rule is satisfied, any information may be arbitrarily appended in 3rd, 4th, ... columns. For example, if the EW file name is test1.obs and 5 iterations are to be applied , execute as tgvit +5 test1 (Enter) If you further apply successive 3 more iterations, try tgvit -3 test1 (Enter) The results will be writen in test1.abd (Fe abundances correspnding to the final solution), test1.ptb (Including information of error estimation), and test1.log (log file of iterations, written in "append" mode). 4. About CHECKUP program In principle, only TGVIT program should suffice for determinations of Teff, log g, vt, and [Fe/H]. Actually, however, since "inappropriate" data are more or less included in the input data file (*.obs), it is necessary to reject them by checking the abundance results corresponding to the resulting parameter solutions . CHECKUP can be used foer this purpose, which has two modes: interactive rejection mode (keycode: "w" or "c") and automatic rejection mode (keycode: "a"). Its usage is as follows: checkup data_file_name(without_extention) keycode (Enter) In the interactive mode, a graphic window appears (for "w": A vs. EW plot; for "c": A vs. chi plot) where you can reject inappropriate lines by left-clicking on them (circle is changed to cross) [if you want to recover crosses into circles, just right-click on them]. The two horizontal lines correspond to 2.5*sigma (sigma is the standard deviation) shown as a rough reference estimate for rejection judgement. When finished, left-click at an arbitrary point in the margin (i.e., outside of the figure) of this window, then the *.obs datafile will be updated (by excluding the rejected lines), which should be used for the next iteration. "*.del" file contains the data which have been deleted by clicking. In case you do not want to update *.obs file, just click the "x" botton at the top-right corder of the window to close it. Nothing will be changed by this. Meanwhile, in the automatic rejection mode (keycode: "a") all lines corresponding to |A-A_mean| > 2.5*sigma are silently rejected to automatically update the *.obs file. (If the number of available lines is sufficiently large, this mode may be useful, even though lines may tend to be overrejected.) 5. Test run example Try as follows as a typical test example. [1] First, open the command prompt window and move to an arbitrary working directory (for example, if this is "C:\tgvwork", execute "cd C:\tgvwork (Enter)"). [2] Copy the test data 010700.obs (for tau Cet) to the current directory by executing copy C:\tgv\010700.obs . (press Enter) Also, copy the intial parameter data file (case of 5800/4.0/1.5) copy C:\tgv\initparm.tmp . (press Enter) Since this *.obs file will be updated by execition of CHECKUP, we make a backup copy (*.obk) for it as copy 010700.obs 010700.obk (Enter) First, we run TGVIT for the first time with 5 iterations tgvit +5 010700 (Enter) In this first run, a prompting message appears asking whether it is OK to use "5800 4.0 1.5" as a starting solution. If it's OK, just press Enter key; otherwise, input other set (e.g., 6200 2.3 3.0 ) from the command line and press Enter key. [REMARK: If a warning "params.dat is not found!" has appeared, copy the "params.dat" file from C:\tgv to the current directory.] I assume this first TGVIT run has ended successfully. Then, the next task is reject inappropriate lines by running CHECKUP in the automatic rejection mode. checkup 010700 a (Enter) Next, run TGVIT further with 5 iterations using the updated datafile and the previous established parameter set as the new initial solutions. tgvit -5 010700 (Enter) Lets repeat this sequence one more time. checkup 010700 a (Enter) tgvit -5 010700 (Enter) In many cases this sahould be sufficient to obtain the well-coverged and consistent solution. You can check this by examining 010700.log file and the A vs. EW plot which you can display by executing checkup 010700 w (Enter) By the way, this whole sequence can be done by a batch file (run.bat) in C:\tgv. Copy it to the current directory as copy C:\tgv\run.bat . (Enter) and execute it as run 010700 (Enter) This batch file can be modified freely as you like. 6.
