NAOJ Overseas Business Travel Insurance

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) consider considers the risks associated with overseas business trips and provides travel insurance for employees traveling abroad.

1. Overseas Business Trips Covered by Insurance

NAOJ's travel insurance will cover the following overseas business travel:

  1. Trips departing from Japan to a foreign country and returning to Japan
  2. Trips departing from a foreign country to Japan and returning to the country
  3. Trips departing from a foreign country to Japan and then to another third country, and returning to the original country

The insurance period is processed based on Japan Standard Time (JST). In principle, the coverage period is from departure from home to return home.
 (If there are other duties before departure, the coverage period is from airport departure/arrival.)

2. Insured Persons

  1. NAOJ faculty and staff who have been ordered to travel by NAOJ.
  2. NAOJ faculty and staff who have been requested to travel by others.
  3. Persons undertaking overseas business travel upon request from NAOJ.

3. Insurance Coverage and Limits

Insurance coverage and maximum coverage amounts are as follows:

1. Injury death & residual disabilities       30,000,000 JPY
2. Medical treatment cost (injury/illness) & rescuer cost       UNLIMITED
3. Illness death       30,000,000 JPY
4. Liability     100,000,000 JPY

* If you need additional coverage, please buy your own private insurance.
* Identification of the time of occurrence of cause of illness, the onset time of illness, certification of an illness, and the time of commencement of medical treatment will be determined by a physician.
* If the physician determines that the traveler had a pre-existing disease (existence of a medical history or chronic health condition) prior to the scheduled business trip, any medical condition arising out of pre-existing diseases will not be covered under this policy, regardless of whether or not the traveler was aware of such pre-existing disease.
* No deductible payable on any benefits.
* This policy does not cover liability for car accidents. Travelers who are planning to use rental cars while traveling abroad are recommended to buy their own car insurance.

The procedures are done about 3 weeks to 1 month before the departure date.

6. Changes/Cancellations

Please contact the person in charge immediately if there are any changes or cancellations to the schedule.
 Please be careful if there is no contact for any reason, you may not be able to use the services described in the overseas travel insurance policy or receive insurance money.

7. In case of illness/injury

Refer to the "info.pdf (for receiving medical treatment at medical institutions)" sent together with the traveler's card (insurance certificate) and contact the insurance company directly and follow their instructions.
